I admittedly spend way too much time in front of my hi-fi, but I make sure it's quality time by choosing quality material. It's certainly more gratifying than watching some crap on the telly. I've amassed a collection of CDs and vintage vinyl that I enjoy revisiting on a regular basis. There's simply more satisfaction to be had from meeting old "friends" (often with attached memories) rather than wasting one's time with the garbage the music industry churns out nowadays.
The more I have to endure the sonic excrement that passes as "music" these days, the more I come to realise the number of good recordings in the universe is indeed finite. If we were to send off another Voyager probe into the cosmic unknown, I'd attach any one of these as the next golden Sounds of the Earth disc. We don't wanna look like complete imbeciles should the aliens ever intercept it... ;^)
There's a lot of great material out there that I fondly remember hearing as a kid in the glorious 80s, which always brings on a smile (and a tear or two, in some cases). Vintage ska and reggae also made up the staple of my early college years. My taste has diversified since then, notably to include classical compositions (if more for the recording quality than the performance itself) as well as a few oddities that are simply on the shelf for the novelty factor. After all, variety is the spice of life.
So here I've compiled some of my fave recordings which see rotation on my turntable platter or CD spindle. Bear in mind that these are by nature highly subjective recommendations. Note also that some of these recordings may be rare and difficult to obtain, possibly only on vinyl.
